Hi, was thinking about buying my husband a tillermate. Anyone out there
with any experience with one? If so, was wondering if you are happy
with it and which one you bought. Should I buy the most expensive one
or the less expensive one?
Thanks, I will be looking for you thoughts.

Michael,
I wanted to say the same thing, but after 2 divorces, I have learned to keep my
mouth shut. (At least once a year)

Dear Sheila,
Aren’t you your husband’s best tillermate? (just kidding)
What kind of boat do you sail, and what kind of sailing do you do,
e.g. only daytrips, weekends, longer ocean trips?

Dear Michel, We are new to sailing…just bought a Freedom 25.
Initially we will be on the Long Island Sound probabbly day trips
bue eventually we would like to go on longer trips. My husband
thought it would be a good idea to have a tillermate since he may be
out locally by himself. thanks, Sheila
The Freedom 25 has a very light helm in all but the heaviest winds. The
cheaper model will more than do the job. For long trips the most
important thing might be your battery capacity if you have an
outboard. Alternatively look in the files section and you will find
pictures of a Freedom 21 with a bungee system that will work for short
periods of time (like going up to the mast) for a lot less money. But
then you won’t have the joy of giving a gift. (perhaps he would like an
electronic wind speed indicator instead).

Dear Larry, thank you for your advice about a tillermate. I looked
at the files but do not know which on to open to look at the bungee
system. Can you advise me? Thanks again
Sheila
Freedom 25
I have used a (manually operated) Davis Tiller Tamer on a 30’ Olson
911, two Freedom 21s, and now on my Freedom 25. Works great, and
inexpensive ($45). I’ve also used a raytheon tiller Autopilot 12v
st1000 ($450)on the F21s, and have a Raytheon st2000 ($600) autopilot
on the F25(in addition to a Davis tiller tamer). Charlie on Mobile Bay,

Look under the files section for “F21 help Impeder” and you should find
the posting. Charlie’s suggestion may be better as it still offers you
a gift to give.

Thank you all for your advice. I did not know there were so many
options. They are all interesting so we will have to decide which
would be the best option for us. Thanks again. I find this group very
interesting and helpful. Sheila
