toe rail/stanchion base problem alert

Posted by jackcarles (johncarles@…>)

I have had to remove all stanchion bases from my Hoyt 32 and found
that there is serious corrossion of the toe rail and bolts that hold
the bases to the vertical. In one case the damage nearly went through
the toe rail. I will repair by grinding out corrossion, filling will
epoxy and having an aluminum plate (like a switch plate) to cover the
damage and serve as a new bedding for the base on all stanchion
points. There was also corrosion on a couple of the bolts on the
horizontal and used to secure deck to hull and therefore a potential
leak problem.

This problem probably goes unnoticed in most cases, but must surely
exist on other boats(and models). I am replacing stanchions with
Garhauer stanchions: a bargain at $27.

Good Luck,

Jack
