I just got the results of a survey on a 1983 Freedom21 for sale in
FL. There were a lot of 3" vertical cracks in the gel coat along the
water line on the starbord side aft of the keel and an 18 inch semi-
circular crack on the port bow (like a smile) on the water line.
Hammer testing sounded OK but I have some concerns. There were also
numerous horizantal hairline cracks on the mast starting at eye level
and extending almost to the deck. I saw from earlier posts that the
mast cracks are not uncommen and generaly not of concern. The boat
has a bad rudder (top 1/3 shows signs of delamination) and the trailer
is a homebuilt afair with lots of rust and a cracked support tube. By
the way the boat is nearly 740 miles from my home in Alabama. I am
planning to let this one pass me by.
I am also looking at a Freedom21 just 40 miles away. As to be
expected with a 20 plus year old boat it has some issues as well
(amoung which is no trailer and a need for all the running rigging to
be replaced soon).
So here is my question to all you Freedom21 owners out there…
What should I be looking at as reasonable wear on one of these boats?

I’d be interested in this answer as well. I have an 84, shoal draft on
a Triad trailer in a marina on the Estern Shore of Md, which I
mentioned here a month ago. I found no interest at $3000, which I think
is a give away. Clyde

What kind of shap is your F21 in? Do you have any pictures
(including closeups) I might view? The boat in AL is only $2k but no
trailer. I must agree that $3k sounds like a bargin.

Sorry if this posts twice. I am new to this and I don’t know if I
posted my reply to the right address. Anyway…
The boat here in AL is $2k but no trailer so your boat with trailer
for $3k sounds like a deal. But then again, so did the boat on the
East Coast of FL the broaker wanted to trade my JY15 and trailer
for. That was untill I had the survey done and found it was, indead,
too good to be true.
So Clyde, a few questions:
- Are you a Broaker or are you a Privet Party?
- Do you have any photos (including closeups of the keel, rudder,
mast, shotgun mount and the trailer) I might look at?
- Would you be offended if I had a surveyor contact you?

Wayzgoose #258 is a 1986, and in great shape. We have a little bit of
crazing topsides in the gelcoat. Inside is dry without mildew. She’s
in great shape. The CF mast is dull but in perfect shape. No rust, no
blisters, perfect keel, not a drop of water in the bilge.
We looked at the same model and year elsewhere, and it was moldy,
with leaks under all the cabin top bolts. The hull/deck joint was
broken, and the keel didn’t look great. The mold in the fuel locker
was extremely disgusting.
Neither had a trailer, and both were listed at $5,000. We paid
considerably less for the better boat.

Sorry I have not gotten back to you sooner. If you’ve seen my earlier
post, I’m having some heart issues. I’m not a broker. My boat is in
fair to good shape. It has spent most of it’s life on a trailer, I
think. I bought it in"2000, have had it on a boat lift on the Bay and
sitting on a trailer in a marina because I haven’t had time.
I sail it like a day sailer, I seldom use more than the main but have a
spin. and wrap jib, and gunmount is intact, have never fooled with the
running lights. I have no problem with a survey, contact me off list
and I’ll forward a messgge from the freedom owners group which
