My agent is International Marine Insurance Services, in Graysonville, MD. The policy was written by Markel Insurance. The Markel adjuster could not have been easier to deal with. Interestingly, I used BoatUS insurance until I bought my Freedom; BoatUS had a rather low-ball view of what a Freedom is worth for the agreed hull value. Markel was willing to write for a higher amount and then raised it a year later when I sent evidence of all of the new equipment I added.
By the way, Alan, the weather here has been so lousy that I’m not sure that the season has begun yet.

who’s your insurance agent? Too bad this was in the middle of the season. But as you say could have been much worse.

Just to report on what finally transpired, it certainly seems like my boat experienced an electromagnetic pulse, rather than a strike, from a nearby lightning strike. But I was lucky: damage was limited to destroying all my new electronics, a 120V GFCI, the alternator, and the engine warning buzzer. No mast, hull, or through hull damages. Even luckier, the insurance company has been very decent about it, so the principal loss is time.

I am a surveyor in Louisiana and have had many lightning strike claims. Your particular situation has some characteristics of lightning but more characteristics of a power surge. I recently was aboard my F 35 when a power surge occurred. The surge blew out my 110 circuit breaker on my breaker panel.
I had an electrician megger test the battery charger, radio, gps, shore power chord and all other 110 and 12 volt circuits and appliances or electronics. My battery charger was tripped and my ground fault circuit was also tripped. Nothing else was disturbed.
If you did experience a lightning strike I would recommend that you haul the boat and look for an exit point. I have only had one boat that did not experience an exit point out of the more than 15 lightning strike claims that I have inspected.
The exit point can be in the area of the bonding system, the keel, a thru-hull or some other area in or near a metal fixture or a ground.
If the exit point is a thru-hull or any other location you could experience failure in the very near future with possibility of water ingress occurring when and where you least expect it. Sometime in the middle of the night when you are not aboard is the most likely time.
Be diligent and prudent in you actions.

The more I found out of order, the more I began to think that she’d been hit by lightning. I don’t know of any way to know for sure, so I’ll describe the damage and hope one of you is more skilled in this than I.The bilge pump was running nonstop. It was a Rulemate 1100 with internal magnetic switch. (Replaced with identical model using existing wires and new one works fine.)VHF, AM/FM/CD, and all electronics dead with blown fuses. Replacing the fuses didn’t solve the problem; they just blew as well.Battery charger not operational when I arrived, although it did work after flicking AC breaker on and off.Cabin AC outlet ground fault circuit interrupter tripped whenever AC circuit breaker turned on.Some evidence of burn marks at VHF antenna junction box under sink in head, but no other visible signs of lightning damage either inside or outside. Of course, are there any?Since the DC panel circuit breakers were all off at the time, it seems that the lightning, if that is what it was, traveled down the VHF antenna to the VHF, AM/FM/CD and to ground, and that the charge from ground worked its way back to the other electronics and to the engine lights.Any other theories or things I should check? Do I need to worry about unseen damage to the mast?I will probably call an electrician on Monday, but I wanted to hear what this group had to say before I did. Many thanks.Al LormanF30 Ab InitioLights, facsm etc., OK.Engine turned over but idiot lights/alarms dead.
