Hello all, when we were motoring our F30 from CT to RI for the recent
survey there was a little oily water in the pan under the engine. Not
more than 1/2" but I dryed it up after the first day and at the end of
the 2nd day it was there again. I couldn’t see any leaking hoses or
obvious source and the surveyor couldn’t either. And the coolant/oil
levels weren’t lower. Anyone ever experience anything similar that
can give me a hint where to start looking? Thanks…

Is the water salty? Rick, If you have fresh water cooling ( a heat exchanger ) your header tank could be overfilled and when the coolant expands it has no space to go so it overflows into bilge if you do not have an overflow tank. I do have fresh water cooling but if it were overflowing wouldn’t the
coolant levels drop? Plus it’s for sure not coolent in the pan.
Someone else asked if the water was salty, but I didn’t taste it
(yuck) and couldn’t smell anything obvious. It’s on the hard now so I
can’t do much testing till Spring. Was just hoping someone might have
been down this path before. It’s only in the drip pan and it wasn’t
like filling it up.

Mine has a drip on the shaft seal…you may want to check there. I tightened the clamps, but will probably put a new shaft seal in the Spring.Good LuckRick Higgens <higgens@…> wrote: Hello all, when we were motoring our F30 from CT to RI for the recent survey there was a little oily water in the pan under the engine. What about a leaking stuffing box…I think that could be a candidate.

We fought this last summer with our Yamar. Turned out the raw water
pump seals were worn out. For us it was cheaper to replace than
rebuilt . This is discussed in the manual.
Of course once we replaced it took a couple of runs to get the hoses
clamped tight, which is actually what I did first and then replaced
the hoses.

I was just starting to see some occasional water in the pan and found a
loose hose clamp. I also checked the hoses at that time and found they were
getting soft so I have preemptively replaced all water hoses and have not
had any further leaks. Engine had about 1600 hours.

Rick- two things I can think of are the stuffing box and the “exhaust
riser”- the piece that the water in pumped into after exiting the
exhaust manifold- check for pinholes rusting through- these have to
be replaced fairly frequently- as often as every 5 years- easy job!
