water tank conversion

Posted by Frank (myslo@…>)

Here´s a question. I am planning to convert the port water tank to
diesel. . (Freedom 33) Has anybody done that lately? (or not so
lately)?

Happy New Year to all.

I would rather keep 80 gals water, and carry jerrycans of diesel on deck…I
get 10 NM/gallon,so 35 or 40 gallons of diesel carry us a long way.

Here’s something to consider Frank…

My port water tank (Freedom 40) has a leak in it and won’t hold water.
This resulted from external corrosion from water intrusion into the
foam in which the tank is bedded (Previous owner ignored deck leak for
a long period of time). I knew about the deck leak, but not about the
tank leak. I was unpleasantly surprised to discover that most of 100
gallons of water ran out into the bilge after I filled the tank
shortly after purchase. I would have been GREATLY chagrined to have
100 (or 80) gallons of diesel in the bilges. I don’t know how
widespread the “leaky tank” problem is in boats with aluminum water
tanks…for all I know, I may have the only one in the world.

If you convert the tank, you’ll need a drain at the low spot to draw
off water and gunk. This will not be an easy installation with the
tank in place.

I haven’t paid that much attention, but the specs (wall thickness) for
the fuel tank may be different than for a water tank.

I’m considering cutting the top out of of mine and removing the
baffles and installing a Nauta bladder tank in part of it (the rest
will be storage.

The port water tank in my F40 is actually labelled as a fuel tank,
so I doubt there’s much difference in thicknesses.

ÇThanks, Jerome, for your opinon I am , though, looking for practical advice on how to convert to fuel, not on what other sailors rather do… Jerome Weinraub <zayde@…> wrote: I would rather keep 80 gals water, and carry jerrycans of diesel on deck…I get 10 NM/gallon,so 35 or 40 gallons of diesel carry us a long way.----- Original Message ----- From: “Frank” <myslo@…>To: <freedomyachts2003@yahoogroups.com>Sent: Saturday, December 31, 2005 11:36 AMSubject: [freedomyachts2003] water tank conversionHere´s a question. Thanks, that is good information. Are (or were) your water thanks stainless? Mine are polypropylene, so I guess That problem is avoided. However, the idea of cutting off the top and cutting out the baffles and installing a bladder is an EXCELLENT idea !!katorpus <katorpus@…> wrote: Here’s something to consider Frank…My port water tank (Freedom 40) has a leak in it and won’t hold water.
