Well…we went to The Chesapeake this past weekend and bought Hull
307, Emmylou. Photos can be seen at

Now we need to deal with some of the same issues I see others talking
about here:

  1. Delivery - do we attempt to sail her 360+ NM up the Chesapeake,
    through the C&D canal, down Delaware Bay out into the Atlantic, up to
    NYC, through Hell’s Gate and on to our comfortable Long Island Sound
    cruising grounds?

Or, do we use a delivery service ($$$.) to truck her up to CT?

If we go the land route, then we are dealing with:

  1. Mast - do we try to unstep ourselves or pay yard fees/labor to have
    the job done with travel lift then crane (and repeat on receiving end)?

If mast is unstepped then I could do some wiring work to add VHF
antannae to mast top as well as a windex and perhaps another halyard
(Emmylou has a staysail that currently runs up on the spin halyard).

Also, the gooseneck fitting is “stressed” at the CF and there is a gap
where flange is popriveted to mast. We saw another F21 “Free Lance” on
the Easter Shore that had big SS band clamps top and bottom to help
secure the connection - anyone have experience with this? Can you tell
from my photos if you think a repair is required or could I add a
couple of band clamps and sail safely?

  1. Trailer - We would love to be able to borrow/rent someone’s trailer
    and bring her up as Max Lent did by road. She has the full fin keel.
    Is there someone out there who would consider such an arrangement?

Thanks - it is really helpful to have a community such as this one to
share with. If anyone wants to come sailing on Long Island Sound (out
of Halloween Yacht Club in Stamford, CT) please know you are invited!

Hi Sean,

From the pictures of Emmylou, she looks like a good boat and the
price was a bargain.

360+ nm seems like too long of a trip unless you work it into a
vacation (cruising). At hull speed @ 5 knots = 72 hours.= three 24
hr days. Or about 9 days in a cruising mode: sailing/motoring
daylight hours (anchoring or marina at night).

I suggest the following:

•Rent or borrow an F-21/ J-22 trailer

•Have the yard pull the mast for you. (but you should remove the boom
and disconnect mast wires to simplify the yard task/cost). If
possible watch what they do and make sure they do not damage the mast
collar. Be sure to have the yard pressure wash her bottom before
putting her on the trailer otherwise grime etc dries and will be
almost impossible to remove.

•Trailer her (the boat) to your local yard and do mast repairs/new
wiring/ vhf antenna/ bottom paint/etc.

Regarding the gooseneck fitting, putting the SS bands top and bottom
probably would work as a temporary fix. But for long term, a correct
repair should be done. I am not familiar with this failure but
hopefully another F-21 owner will reply with their experience.

Good Luck on getting her ready. She will give you and Vivian many
hours/days of great sailing.
