What the heck is that on either side of the rudder?
Maybe some sort of vane mount? Never seen anything quite like it.

It looks as if the mizzen sheet is attached to the contraption.

I saw that in more detailed photos when
the previous owner was selling it. He got rid of the traveler so that the
mizzen sheet is aft of the cockpit which seems quite convenient.
Not sure if it was intended to serve any
other purpose.

What’s growing out of this 33 transom?

I was shopping for an F33 when I looked at this boat
in Slidell LA in late 2002. It was on the hard for
blister repair. This appears to be a steering vane
mount. I don’t know what brand it might have been,
but when I examined it closely, that’s what I decided
it was. The rest of the vane was missing, and only
these two “brackets” were left. I don’t recall
anything special or different about the mizzen lines.

Relocating the mizzen sheet makes a degree of sense since they are
prone to fouling. We almost impacted the south tower of the Golden
Gate Bridge when our mizzen sheet fouled at in inopportune moment. I
was a second or two away from cutting it. Always carry a rigging knife
when sailing. That incident led to a rework of the stern pulpit. If I
was doing it all over again I think I’d not only rework the stern
pulptt but make it lower.
If it’s a mount for a vane relcoating the mizzen sheet back there
wouldn’t make sense as it would just foul the vane. I noticed a line
or something attached to it in the photo but I couldn’t tell if it was
the sheet or not.

Interestingly, this is somewhat how the F-40 CK arrangement is, with a
short V-shaped boomkin on which is mounted the turning block for the
mizzen sheet. The sheet then leads along one of the V’s to a winch on
the transom. The difference is that on the F-40, the V is kept from
being wrenched out of location by two standing rigging stays mounted
on the underside and terminated on the transom. That F-33 looks like a
beefier arrangement.

I saw the ad at

and am interested in a Freedom 33
As you have looked at her, what is she like condition wise? Any extra
info on history etc. What about the blister repair - what sort of
repair was done - do you know? Whole gelcoat strip?
I suppose something put you off…
I had a feeling I saw her for sale also last year, but not sure.
Did you buy a F33?
Thanks
Mike

Probably a mount for a windvane. Mizzen sheets will foul the air
paddle if you’re not careful. One of the few drawbacks of the ketch
is dealing with that mizzen sheeting. We had ours foul at an
inopportune moment and I almost had to cut it to avoid a close
encounter of the expensive kind with the South Tower of the Golden
Gate Bridge.
I always keep plenty of knives handy. I buy the inexpenive ss ones
from a commercial fishing supply house and lash them in a variety of
places. Cheap insurance.
