Windlass for F-32

Posted by Ed Doran (skyebyrd2003@…>)

Thanks to all of you who posted messages. I think I have a somewhat
clearer idea of how to proceed.

Shamrock, I tried to post back to you but was unable to send you
the following message:(your original message in " " marks.

“Took out the hawser pipe and glasses the hole, After glassing I
installed a connector for a wash down hose so that I can clean the
rode as it comes up.”

That’s a terrific idea

“Removed the V berth liner”

I’m not sure what you mean here could you amplifiy a bit?

“Drew the outline of the template on the deck. Created a dam,
surrounding the outline with clay and leveled the area off with
glass to compensate for the curvature of
the deck.”

Did you use the West System Epoxy with microbubbles and glass matte
or just microbubbles?

“The windless should line up directly with the bow roller so that
the chain/rode drops directly down into the chain locker.”

Okay, but what did you do about the forestay? It resides directly
inline with the bow roller. Did you mount the windlass slightly of
center to starboard?

I really appreciate your thorough response and I’ll be looking
forward to hearing your answers to my questions.

I’ve gone ahead and had a Windlass installed on Skybird. I tried to
document the entire process with photos, from start to finish. You
can access the photos that have a brief expanation at:

James Baldwin, a two time circumnavigator actually did all of the
installation work. Meanwhile, I ran and installed all of the wiring,
switches, solenoids, fuses and circuit breakers. The system does not
intrude into the forward compartment, has a perpendicular chain
hawse drop and looks pretty nice on the bow. I will have to add a 6"
pendant to the jib to have it clear the windlass but I don’t feel
that it is much of a compromise. Once you get to the above page,
scroll down until you come to the “Windlass Installation” section.

Cheers,

Ed Doran
