winter storage

Posted by Thomas Hand (freesailah@…>)

I am a new Freedom 35 owner and looking for winter
storage in Maine to New Hampshire. Does anyone have
any suggestions. Many vards require pulling the mast
and I would prefer not to. Also are there any yards
that allow outside contractors for doing work on the
boat?

If you want to keep your mast up for the winter, verify with Great Bay Marine that your mast will fit under the bridge before their yard. I have a F38 and to have any work done there, the mast had to be stepped before the bridge!!! there are a few yacht yards down the river before Great Bay and all the bridges are passable…Kittery Point Yacht yard (www.kpyy.net) and Patten Yacht Yard 207-439-3967. Watch out for the current up the river…it’s wicked!!! Melissa s/v Acedia F38"Pollution is a silent form of violence" -Ralph Nader

Hi Andrew
I have kept boats at Great Bay Mariner in past.
Workmanship there very poor. Also I may have trouble
getting under the bridge. Thanks for your response.

If you’re in the midcoast area of Maine, the Gamage yard in South Bristol,
I believe will store with the mast up. You also might try Boothbay Region
Boatyard in Southport, ME. Both yards allow owners to work on their boats.

Thanks Melissa. I won’t use Great Bay because of there
workmanship. I may try the other suggestions or have
my mast stepped and put it in the park in New Castle.
Where do you get your mast stepped?

I don’t!! I live on my boat. And, after the trouble I had having my mast stepped and unstepped when I had it hauled up to NE, I swear that mast is going to stay in my boat as long as I owe it!! The quote to have a mast stepped in CA (in a recent posting) wasn’t too off from what I paid. I got so screwed from the boat yards that I dealt with. It was quite painful. I honestly would sail down to RI to have any major work done to my boat (Paul Dennis was very good to me and all the work that was done between him and Cove Haven Marina, I have yet to question the quality…hopefully never will) I know Kittery Point will step yourmast, but may not be able to haul you out (I don’t think they have a traveler lift). I’m not sure about Patten’s, but all my Kittery fishermen friends recommended I go there when I needed work done. Good LUck!! Thanks Melissa. I won’t use Great Bay because of thereworkmanship. Thanks Melissa
I spoke with Pattern Yacht Yard and they say I can
keep my mast up. I agree with you. I would prefer not
to step the mast.
