I have been working on bright work lately and have learned that 99% of
what is for sale as “teak oil” is Linseed oil, which when applied makes
wood dark, especially over time. It cost a bit more, but Tung Oil seems
not to have this darkening effect. When applying tung oil, I wear
latex gloves because it is thick and sticky. Plan to through away all
you rags and any cloth that gets tung oil on it. Our woodwork was
exterior and really dry, so I applied the first coat liberally, then
wiped off the excess after 5 minutes, the next day I added a light
second coat. After a week, I lightly dry sanded with 120 paper and
applied Cetol in a matte finish to seal the finish. The bright work was
not from a Freedom, so this is for general boat woodwork.
