Yanmar oil change

Posted by wacormack (wacormack@…>)

When I change my oil I am only getting about two quarts out through the
dipstick. Anyone got a way to get the other two out??

The times I have had a problem with this the engine was not hot
enough and the oil was too thick. I’ve taken to changing it after
motoring into the harbor etc. Just running it at the mooring has
never done the trick. I’ve also had good luck with the cordless
drill adapter pump.

The total oil capacity of the 3gm30f is only around 3+ qts. I use a
Tempo suction oil changer modified with a 18" piece of 1/4" brake
tubing for a dip stick probe. The oil is changed while warm and I
still only get a max of 2.5 qts+/- There is some residual oil you
just won’t get. However, I change the oil at the beginning, middle
and end of the season with a new oil filter at the beginning and
middle changes. The impact of the residual oil is negligable. Don/t
forget to change the tranny oil at least once a year.

I didn’t get which Yanmar engine model you are referring to,
however if it is a 3GM30F, according to my engine manual, the engine
holds 2.6 liters of lubricating oil, which converts to approx. 2.747
US quarts (liquid). If you are getting anything close to 2.25 qts.
out, you’re in good shape, all things considered.
As for oil changes, I prefer to use a stand alone vacuum unit that
will change the oil when it is cold (by S. Ca. standards) because
all the oil galleries have drained and you stand to get out more of
the "contaminated (old) oil. All you gotta do is make sure that you
get the drain pick-up tube ALL the way to the bottom of the pan.
One thing to be aware of tho is that the older raw water cooled
low speed Yanmar engines held about twice as much oil as the newer
GM series. You’d think it would just be the opposite, right?
