Major keel work - anyone have floor pics of 36/38?

Post by gamayun »

So I'm hauled out here in RIchmond and about to get a fairly big job done on the floor and keel. A naval architect who used to work for Gary Mull thought the floor did not look like his design (Kynntana is a Freedom 38). I said I'd ask around to see if anyone has drawings of the floor at the bilge. I've removed these longitudinal boards, which don't provide any structural purpose and were there only to support the soles. Anyone have anything different? Would love to see it!

The floors in later F38s were raised (and their number was apparently increased), in order to increase hull stiffness. The augmented floors are L-shaped fiberglass profiles, which are glassed to the hull. I would suggest you give Paul Dennis a call, as he oversaw the production of these boats, and I believe he has also added/reinforced floors on boats where they delaminated from the hull.

Thanks, Josh!! I think you nailed it. Really appreciate your post and the pictures. The yard is going to extend those stringers to the settees and grind out the damaged fiberglass from a previous grounding. I wonder what year this changed with the F36/38s? I'll give Dennis a call now, too.

Glad I could help! Just a note on terminology: the supports that go across the hull are called "floors," which is quite confusing. Stringers are supports that run fore and aft.

I appreciate that reminder on the terminology. That is what the naval architect had explained to me, too. To my landlubber brain, it seems awkward to call those cross braces "the floor."

I love this forum. Lots of good info here and it's very helpful when people post their experiences. Thanks all :)

Thanks, Jim D and Rich, for input about your Freedoms. It's probably not a bad design for coastal cruising but the naval architect called this a "small floor." The floor needs to extend at least to the base of the settees to give that section a lot more strength. I'll post the after pics. I promise!

Oh wow, Josh, I'm just now seeing the bracing you installed for the table legs. I can't begin to tell you how many times I've dumped a whole table of food when I kicked that leg. How do you like it? Is it ever in your way when you're at sea and not using the table0?

Do you mean those white things on the sole? Those are for an igloo cooler which the previous owners installed. I upgraded the refrigeration when I bought the boat, and I got rid of them.

The table leg is indeed a hazard! I have kicked it countless times myself, though I’ve never dropped the table as a result. On my first Freedom, I installed a barrel bolt on the leg that slid into a hole in the floor. This wasn’t an ideal solution; the bolt rattled like crazy and I had to keep a rubber band around it underway. On my current boat, Freedom had upgraded the hardware they used for the table leg, and it’s much better. There’s a lot more friction in the fold-out brace that supports the leg, and it “locks” into a detent when it’s fully open. I’m sure you could find something similar to improve your table. Even something that allows you to lock the leg at 45° with a knob would be pretty simple.
