fuel system

I have a 1992 45 ft Aft cockpit with a Yanmar 4JH2 HTE. . the fuel line runs from the tank pickup to a Simco Fuel Coach model number 888-0001. From that device two fuel lines run to the Yanmar. One if the lines run to my Racor filtered, the other to a filter assembly on the engine that feeds the injector pump.
I have an electric fuel pump at the engine. I cannot get fuel to that pump.
This is not how the Freedom schematic shows it. It shows the fuel return going right back into the tank.
My mechanic is suggesting eliminating the Fuel Coach and running the fuel line directly to the engine fuel pump and the return back to the tank, as shown on the original diagram from Freedom.
My question why was the Fuel Coach installed and what does it do?
