Cutlass (Morse) Bearing Removal - F-33
Time to pick thy minds.
Have the shaft removed and looking at my cutlass. It's about 6-inches (150-mm) in length and I would say 3-4 inches (75-100 mm) from the end of the stern tube.
I am looking for some "Ideas" on what is a method of removal that those have used. I will swing by the harbor tomorrow and measure the inside diameter (ID) of the stern tube. Was thinking of a washer on a all thread, insert from the inside out and trying that.

Sounds like a workable idea - there is an extraction tool available where the new cutlass bearing is pushed in and the old one is pushed out in the same motion - similar principal, only more expensive….. that’s also how I remove thru hulls

You can try knocking it out with a wooden drift first, but if it won't come out easily then yes, you'll have to make yourself a puller with a long bolt with a washer on the inboard end, as you say.
You'll need a short section of (e.g.) scaffold pole to go over your stern tube (otherwise how does the bearing get out). You'll need a fairly stout piece of flat metal to go over the aft end of the scaffold pole (that you'll be screwing the nut down onto.
Your inboard washer will also need to be made of pretty stout material (or doubled up) - if the bearing won't come out with a drift then the forces required will bend your average washer.
If you're working alone & have to feed it in from outside, your washer will have to be modified - elongate the hole plus cut / file down the sides, so it can be turned at an angle to slide through the bearing, then will catch on the inboard end of the bearing as you start to pull it back out again.

I am going to try a "Socket" that will just fit in the Stern Tube and a pipe from the inside. Give if a few hits to see if it moves any. If not then looks like I will have to cut it with a hacksaw blade and go from there. It will be a few days before I get to it. It does look rather worn out. I have notice a wallowed section in my shaft. Guess I also need to find someone or someplace to make me a new shaft. Anyone have a recommendation? I will ask around in Anchorage but I have a feeling I will have to seek this service from the lower 48. Shaft is straight, just wallowed... I'll post and see how it goes...

The "wallowed" section is up by the packing gland - not the morse bearing.
I am also considering going pss dripless. Figure I am 15K into this motor, what's another 300... Yea/na for the pss?

Re: Cutlass (Morse) Bearing Removal - F-33
I replaced the cutless bearing, shaft seal, shaft and coupling this year on my M28. On the cutless bearing, I extracted it using a combination of sockets (an "innie" and an "outie" with a long carriage bolt and a bunch of washers. But I also used a hacksaw to cut some longitudinal slices in the bearing (being as careful as I could to get a cut deep enough to free the bearing without cutting into the strut). It came out relatively easily after that. I've watched people on YouTube do the same thing in a lot less time with a Sawzall but I'm not that brave. Personally wouldn't bang on the strut with a hammer very hard. I already had some disturbing cracks where the strut is bonded into the hull and ended up grinding that out and re-bonding that area.

Thanks Walter. Yea I can be a "Bull in a China Shop" so maybe some "precuts" are in order. I too saw the sawzall and given it's only 6-inches I will utilize a hacksaw to "Score" it.
If it stops dumping rain I will run down and start the process.
