1981 FREEDOM 33 CAT KETCH MAIN MAST

Post by Brad »

Hi guys,

Looking to purchase a carbon fiber or composite forward/main mast for a 1981 Freedom 33 Cat Ketch.
Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Brad

I also would look for any freedom masts starting with Freedom 30 sloop. Longer masts can be just cut to the size.

Brad,
This may be difficult - but see the recent posts by Saorse (?) in Findhorn if you really want carbon. His came from Australia and the mandrel should be available. There's also a very small company called Freewing Masts at Clachnaharry Road, Inverness, Scotland IV3 8RA. I have popped my head into their workshop but not a lot was happening. In the past they have produced some very large spars.

I suggest joining the Junk Rig Association to get at their archives.

What look like very usable spun/tapered alloy sections are now widely used as lamp posts (lighting columns) in the UK. Get a JCB and a dark night?

Happy New Year.

Brad, where are you located. I believe there is a F36 mast available in Boston Ma.

Hi Jim,

Would you happen to know if that F36 is from a cat-ketch?

Also, who might I contact in that area to follow up?

Thanks in advance,

Brad

Hello Brad,

I was mistaken, the mast in Boston is for a Freedom 30 sloop. I saw the mast in May and it looked fine. Not 100% sure if it is still available. You should be able to adapt it for the F33 main mast. Only reason I have not purchased it is because it is so hard to transport a mast of this length. I will PM you the the phone #.

Happy sailing

Hi Jim,

I'm a professional truck driver and I thought that I'd let you know that flatbed trucks in the U.S. can transport loads up to 54' in length without any trouble nor special permits for oversized loads.

Are you sure folding prop will fit into spot? On F28, identical, but smaller, there is no way folding prop can fold without hitting the rudder.
