Seeking Opinions-First Time Rigging my m28'

Post by Clemson »

Today I attached the boom and associated rigging. This is my first time doing this as it is a new boat to me and the mast was recently stepped. I tried what the diagram in the manual suggested for the main sheet but it would seem that would require a double block, because two individual blocks side by side created a situation that did not look right because the two blocks looked like they could interfere with each others movement at some point, a problem waiting happen, though it worked. The set up below works but my friend said it looked wrong. Does anyone see a problem with it.

Next question is reefing lines. The manual runs them both on the port side, and that is where the clutches are for them, but the starboard side line rubs against the vang line where it crosses over. Ideas?

Last, but not least, it seems like the vang line should have a block at the mast, but there is not one, so at the moment it is running straight to the organizer. This cannot be right because the chafe on the organizer is obvious. Unfortunately I can't upload an other image. I can in a reply if someone needs to see what I am describing.

Tomorrow I will try to figure out the jib rigging, but again this is my first time launching this sailboat, and though I theoretically understand the peculiarities of the Freedom jib, if anyone has pictures, or knows of past post describing how it is rigged I would be grateful.

See if these drawings help out…it is a little bit of a funky looking arrangement but does seem to work.

Not sure if the F28 jib has the same arrangement as the F21 but I assume it is in the absence of a forestay. In my setup the jib hanks onto the halliard. There is a diagram of my setup where I raise and lower from the cockpit in this thread:

Here's a few pics of my F28; my setup has two blocks on the same shackle. Perhaps you have your forward mainsheet block attached to the shackle where the vang goes? Also I don't have that collar around the mast for the vang so it attaches directly to base.

I think mine is pretty much the same as Walter’s.

Thanks for the replies. I will change it back to what I thought looked wonky because we seem to have a consensus. I love this forums members.

Myself and a friend sailed her home today, a nine hour journey, Wells Main to Little Bay Newington NH. I will make a post about her Maiden Voyage in the next couple days. For now I will just say "I love my Freedom!!"

Congratulations and you should be looking forward to a great summer of sailing ahead of you! I'm not too far from you in Haverhill MA if there's ever anything I can help with.
