Re: Water coming in at shaft
Although this looks like the culprit I have a bore scope on order and will look at the muffler.

Re: Water coming in at shaft
I gave this some thought while driving home. The leak only occurs when the motor is running. The leak appears to be coming from above the stern shaft. The water heater fresh water supply was disconnected yet the leaks appears to be clear and not green antifreeze. Antifreeze levels in the engine were normal.
Looks like I will pull the exhaust next since I am leaning that way. Will not be able to run the engine till mid April due to temperature and no fresh water to attach. It will be good practice and piece of mind.

The hunt begins. Muffler looks ok but I will take it home and fill with water. Still single digits at night but it has been warming up to the 20's during the day.

Re: Water coming in at shaft
Oh yea - Dont go head first down the very aft starboard locker. What a you know what to get out.
The very aft elbow was rusted but I didn't see an obvious crack. I will take a look at the exhaust where it goes out. Since I have all of this out I will replace what I can.

Re: Water coming in at shaft
Well I had to cut an inspection hole but the culprit has been found. As shown the nipple has completely rusted away. Now to order new parts.

Re: Water coming in at shaft
Well every elbow was rusted out that was black pipe. The only exception was the brass one that is at the very end where it exits the boat.
Yet I did replace all the bad ones with black pipe again. I am on a time crunch to get the boat back in the water and motor over to the harbor.
Now that I have access openings and have mastered the boat yoga position that allows you to reach the stern I will replace the black pipe with brass but not until a later time.

Good to run that down and find the culprit (s). You can do bronze which may be $$$ - brass will also have corrosion issues. St. steel - go with 316 alloy would work. They also make fiberglass fittings that are meant for exhaust service.

Yep a replacement down the road for sure. Given my remote access and cost of shipping I will do some research before replacement again.
