Re: Cutlass (Morse) Bearing Removal - F-33
S/V Arctic Tern’s cutlass bearing is located in the stern tube. There is no strut to damage. Look for and back off any set screws before trying to remove the cutlass.

Yep staring at it yesterday. IS there any set screws that are standard? If so they are not visible.
As for the socket idea. My ID of the Stern Tube is 1-1/4". A 1" sockets is 1-1/4" OD. I will see if that will work regarding a few subtle taps with a pole and hammer.

On my 4040, there were set screws holding it in place.

Wondering if they are metal or non metal. Thinking about a magnet.

My F33 has two stainless set screws pressing on the cutlass bearing. Poke around next to the cutlass to see if can find them. I think your socked idea may work. I used a plug with a shoulder made to fit the ID of the stern tube and the ID of the cutlass, and a threaded rod. Outside of the boat I had a tube, with ID greater than the OD of the cutlass, with a cap and hole in the center for the threaded rod.

On my 33 there were two set screws for the cutlass bearing. But they were puttied over. I could see slight depressions and then used a pointed tool to scratch down to the set screw. Be careless when installing the new one. If you put too much pressure with the Allen wrench it will bend the bronze inward ruining it or causing friction on the shaft.

Here's a photo of the prop strut showing the location of the set screws. I suspect that yours will be different.

Yep I located it just past the distal end (White Section) on both sides of your photo. They basically "Came Out" with a pick.... Good
