am interested in purchasing this 1982 freedom cat ketch. i am a
little doubtful about having a center board. what are the pro’s and
cons of a boat with a center board. am thinking about doing some off
shore sailing with the boat.
any and all comments are welcome pretaining to the boat and your
experience with a center board
Greg,
I’ve raced and sailed keel/centerboarders for most of my adult life,
mostly on Pearson Dolphins and Wanderers, and now on my Freedom 40
CK. My parents had a Wanderer for years (still their favorite, I
think), and when I was looking for a liveaboard, having a shoal draft
boat was paramount for a number of reasons. It’s hard for me to
imagine sailing anything else, although of course few are still made.
you can get into shallow harbors (my dad always calls
this ‘gunkholing’), you can adjust the stability of the vessel
somewhat on off-wind legs. I had the board full-down running downwind
in Narragansett bay toward Onset with a following sea. It provides
better tracking upwind (as well as slowing the heeling moment), and
when the boat is pulled, the bottom is at a height that generally
comfortably allows for painting (as comfortable as bottom painting
ever is, anyway). a dubious ‘advantage’ is apparent from its nick-
name as the ‘rock finder.’ better a board than the bottom, I
suppose…
Someone will be bound to point out that some of the disadvantages are
that a) to paint it, you’ve got to raise the boat fairly high to drop
it down enough, b) there are a million stories about pennants
breaking (inspect often), c) there are a thousand stories about the
*#$!! swivel pins corroding and letting go. moving parts mean more
that can go wrong, but hey - it’s a boat! waddaya expect?

Lance: I too am considering a Freedom 28 or 33 w/ centerboard for your “gunkholing” reasons. W/ shallow draft I can anchor my twin-keeled Westerly, 3-ft draft, clossest to the beach, avoide all the yahoos dragging in my lee, keep inshore where it’s calmer and have a shorter row ashore! Have you looked up the review in Practical Sailor on the F33? If memory
serves the boat they reviewed (or at leat the pictures in the article) were
of an F33 with a centerboard. The trunk in the cabin really chopped up the
interior space. When we went to look at the F33 (which we ended up buying)
I was not expecting to like the boat becuase of this. The boat we saw was
an F33 with a shoal keel and a really great open interior. I probably spend
more time below then actually sailing and I would rather have the open
interior with either a deep or shoal keel. My preference is the shoal since
I am a coastal cruiser and the advantage of anchoring in shallow water lets
us slip into alot of spaces that other boats our size can’t.

I wouldn’t mind the trunk chopping up the interior. I’ve been
offshore in boats with “open interiors” and the lack of stuff to hang
on to is really annoying. And there are times when you have to go to
weather when that cb would be nice.

Be realistic as to weatherliness. My F33,4.5 ft draft keel is not
spectacular to windward. She has full bows to support the weight of her
mainmast, which limits windward punching through seas. The LARGE diameter of
the masts ruins laminar flow over the fwd part of the main and mizzen, and
there goes more weatherliness. Adding a CB can’t make up for the above. Fall
off the wind a bit and these are not hindrances to performance. Below ,my 33
is capacious, and I have lots to hold on to in a seaway…I prefer the
simplicity of a keel-one less system to bother with.BTW,I have regular booms

I sailed both shallow draft and (my own) CB F33 CK with wrap around
sails.
Every other comment here is true;
plusses of the CB:
better windward ability than a keel version (but of course not as
good as a J35 or likewise)
anchoring and drying out (I use Franklin Yacht Legs) in shallow
water.
trunk is a good backrest while cooking at sea
80 turns on the winch to get the board up is my gym
better manoeuvering in harbours and locks with the board down
soft brake when grounding; one third of the ballast is in the board
and this stops your F33 smoothly without a bump.
minuses of the CB:
trunk splits the cabin
lifting and painting it
maintenance of pennant (I replaced it after 5 years)(i never have
trouble with pennant or bolt)
you have to sweat to get the board up
I must say that both builder and designer did a very good job with
this CB: I never hear it crack or move, whine or rattle (only when
lifting, but that may be my own body)
One extra plus: the CB makes your freedom sound like a marine mamal.
Put your ear next to the tube that gets the pennant up to the deck
and…you hear her breathing in and out!
