Having never see a marine diesel engine before buying my 1984 Freedom
32 my learning curve has been steep.
After sailing under stout conditions, with the rail near the water, I
have cooling water problems when starting the engine. I have to pop
off the exit hose on my raw-water pump to get exhaust water flowing
out the back.
I have changed the impeller, checked the impeller chamber for flaws,
lowered the raw-water strainer, replaced the exhaust elbow, replaced
and lowered the anti-sphion valve, and replaced the seal on the raw-
water strainer.
None of this has made a difference. Does anyone have an idea of what I
should try next?

Merrick
Sounds like one
of 3 things
1)
suction leak in
front of pump
2)
pump
3)
restriction in
the down stream side.
Most likely is
suction side. Try and clear hose down stream from the pump and look for
bubbles. If no bubbles, then restriction either side and or impeller pump
problem. One other possibility is installing the impeller with the wipers
in the wrong direction. They should be on the forward side as the pump
turns.
The problem may
not be related to the sailing/motoring event. Also, if the old impeller
lost parts, they may be lodged in the heat exchanger.
Good luck in
your process of elimination.

Possibly the intake hose is soft and collapsing under vacuum.

Merrick, I went through almost precisely the same problem with my 3GM, a few years back. The cause of the problem might be a number of things, as rightfully indicated here by others. It also could be a leak in the shaft bearing of the raw water pump. HOwever, one thing is for certain: Your system, at this time, relies on gravity flow, from the through hull fitting right to the impeller. Interrupt that column of water , (as, for example, when you heel the boat) and the resultant air in front of the water will interrupt the gravity flow, and thus your pump aint pumping.
YOu have eliminated the most obvious so urce, the impeller. Check all points upsteam which might allow air to enter the system. If you have eliminated them all, then your problem is the pump shavt seal of the raw water pump.Merrick White <r__merrick_white@…> wrote:
