First day of the season, 20 knots and we blew out a reef point. Sad. We will ask Harding for a repair but it is an old sail (blue moon, ‘ 95 4040). Had anyone bought new?
The quantum loft in rochester NY “made” my main a few years ago and did a beautiful job. (Former owner made the purchase). I say “made” because all they do is design it and a super loft in Indonesia assembled it. All sail lofts do it this way now, and if I was going to have a new main built for me today, I would consider talking to your local sail loft. They can take all the measurements, design it and have it built. Then if theres a problem you will be able to go to them for service. I had a genoa made by Precision sails on my old boat a few years ago and learned the hard lesson of “you get what you pay for”. It was cheaper but even though I took my own measurements, the sail just didnt look right.
I bought new jib and main 3-4 years ago from Quantum Sails in Rochester NY 40/40 #16. No complaints other than they did not tell me that the foot is free standing. It no longer slides into the slot in the boom. I had to call them when I couldn’t get the sail into the slot the way the original sail did. The new battens are different as well. Not as bulky.
They have all the original Freedom sail patterns.
A loose foot allows you to tie your reef lines to the boom under each reef point. Plus it makes rigging the sail onto the boom much easier. Did you end up keeping it that way?
Good info. We hired Quantum RI to rig Bleu Moon. Nate is a really good guy.
Do you mind if I ask what the cost was?

I just got a new mainsail for my Freedom 40/40 from Quantum Thurston in Bristol RI.
I looked at your boat, Blue Moon, last year.
I figured that out after two hours of unsuccessfully trying to attach the sail to the boom and then talking with Quantum. “oh yeah, we forgot to tell you.”![]()
There was no way of attaching the sail to the boom the way the original sail was. We were fine once we figured out that they changed the design. I have no problem with the change, it’s just that they didn’t tell me about it
I just looked it up in my files. It was 5 years ago and the main cost $7,656 and the jib $2,838 after discounts and taxes. I dealt with Kris Warner who I believe is the owner.
Marc, how much was the main. Nate just rigged Blue. Nice guy.
