A hello from a newbie..........and a question?

Hi all,

question is simple…Is there any such boat as a fixed fin keeled
Freedom 21? I was under the impression that they were twin drop keeled
boats???

Best, Charlie.

Hi Charlie,

“In the beginning” was the deep fin keel F21 (3ft 9" draught) and then a
shallow draught shoal keel version (2ft draught) and these versions were
essentially the USA produced versions. When the F21 was adopted over
the pond here in the UK Freedom Yachts developed a twin lift keel
version which incorporated the slightly odd looking winged bulb keels
and gave the possibilty of sailing on damp grass - draught keels up of
1ft 4" & keel & draught keels down of 2ft 6". Then finally UK Freedom
Yachts offered the neat looking Warwick Collins tandem wing keel which
came in at a draught of 2ft 9".

I do not have the statistics of how many of each were built but over
here in the UK but the majority were twin lift keel versions and round
about 20 Warwick Collins keel boats with just a few fin keel F21’s. I
will put some photos on our site showing the two differernt UK-build
keel versions in detail.

I have come to like my twin lift keel F21 - however having spoken to a
number of folks who have lost a keel at sea under rough conditions I
would caution owners to look after their twin lift keel lifting system &
look out for line chafe in the lifting lines. All in all I think that
the Warwick Collins keel is the most attractive keel option as it seems
to have all the hydrodynamic efficiency of the deep fin keel with a
significant reduction in draught. Unfortunately thay are hard to find
over here & only come onto the market infrequently. Another slight but
annoying thing is that since the twin lift keel version sits so snugly
down on her keels on the trailer one has to crawl under the tight space
under the boat to antifoul every Spring - in this regard I would really
llike a Warwick Collins keel so I could apply antifoul paint in seated
comfort?

I have re-engineered the twin lift keel mechanism on my boat (DAYDREAM
UK Sail No 205)as in its orginal state it was not easy to inspect or
maintain and if anyone is interested I can put a write-up on this
modification on our website?

Cheers,

Wilf Bishop

Charlie:

In the US they made 2 keels: Fixed Fin and a Shoal Draft. I believe
that in the UK the same hull was built with the twin drop keel that
you mention.

Hi Charlie,

I have just sent Max Lent a write-up on the two keel options that were
offered on UK-built Freedom 21’s when they were in production over
here in the period 1983 - 1997. When Max has a chance to put it on
our modificaitons site you can find it at http://freedom21.info

Best regards,
