Ahh....the naming of boats...

Hi Lola,
Hope you enjoy your retirement on your F30. As a cat
person, I’m sure you’ll appreciate the significance of naming. As TS
Eliot so eloquently opined in “Old Possums Book of Cats” to
wit…“the naming of cats is a difficult matter…” The same is
true for boats. I wish you the best of luck in choosing your moniker…

Names: Anyone name their boat FREEDOM? Considering…had thought of
all the songs with my name…undecided.

Thank you, Lola F30

Names are so difficult.

The name for my Freedom 32 came out of the blue one day. Before
joining an international consulting company and moving to South
Florida (Boca) I was practicing law and communication consulting in
Indiana where we lived. I settled a big case and flew down to
Florida and bought the boat in one day.

I then began flying down once a month, often with my family, to take
care of the boat and go sailing. Lots of potential names but nothing
jelled.

Right before a trip my wife and I were in court (she is also a
lawyer) and I told the judge I couldn’t be at a hearing the next
week. My wife spoke up and said “He has to fly to Florida to visit
his GIRLFRIEND” and the name stuck.

So we named her “girlfriend”.

We got lots of gossip around the courthouse afterwards.

Good luck!

You are absolutely right about how names
come about. I meant to ask Pedro why he named a sailboat Nitro?
Look it up in Spanish but it did translate to anything I could find. It’s
difficult when coming into a port or marina and they keep asking how big is
your power boat…… Anyway I am renaming my boat this spring performing
the proper “Ceremony for Renaming Your Boat” by Capt. Pat. I
chose Freebird because…last May I had to put down my Pug (a ten year
companion for my wife and I, who was smarter then all three of my kids put
together) because of cancer. Upon leaving the Vets I started my car and
the radio came on and what was playing was “if you leave me today will
you remember me tomorrow” which was followed immediately with a ton of
tears….so its FreeBird!

Nitro is short for nitromethane that is used in racing fuels. Also I used it in
model airplane engines.

Maybe the guy is into auto racing?

Hi Lola,
Everyone seems to have a story and I love to hear
'em. Girlfriend, Freebird…
Mine is fairly esoteric. In 1889, a 23 year old pregnant Armenian
woman emigrated to America in the hold of a freighter with her 3
sons. My grandfather, her eldest, was 6 at the time. The settled in
the Boston area and made a life for themselves in their new
country. Years later, Baba, as we grandchildren called him, would
say “Anoush Koon” to us when he put us to bed. Anoush Koon in
Armenian means Sweet Dreams. So, there you have it.
Like I said, eveyone has a story.
Good luck with your naming.
Best,
TW

Hi Lola,

OK…I just purchased my 3rd Freedom sailboat from Al Lorman
previously known as Ab Initio. (In the process of a name change
brainstorm as shes currently on a cargo ship bound for Thailand).
History.
1st Freedom, a 1982 F28 Cat Ketch. Named “Different Now”. Kind of in
reference to the rig but actually named after a song I liked very
much. Then my second Freedom a 1986 F36. One of my staff at work
sarcastically said why don’t I name my new boat something different.
So I…matter of factly said, OK “Something Different” it is. (Thats
not what she meant but it worked). Now onto my new to me F30. I’m
thinking to stay with my “different” theme and name her “Simply
Different” or “Gotta 'b Different”. What do you think?
Different enough?

Cheers,

Doug

Al,
I’m not sure when we’re pulling the cover off “Glory,” and I’ll be in
Georgia the weekend of April 18-22 to pick up “RockIt (not a
Freedom).” But when you know your plans, if you’re interested, let me
know and you’re welcome to come by Constitution Marina and visit. If
we have sails, great. Otherwise we’ll give you the nickel tour.

I’m still trying to meet the owners of the Freedom 28 out on D dock.
it looks like a well-kept boat.

For a “blaster”, it’s short for nitroglycerin which is a very sensitive, very powerful explosive compound. Good name for a for a fast boat- but for myself, having been blown up, I’d lean more towards something like “Pillow”! ha!! Merlin

They say the best of all worlds is to sail, fix, do projects, etc on someone
else’s boat where the funds and materials are supplied by the owner. I would
like to propose the same sort of deal with a little twist. Since lawyers are
floating in money…you can use my boat as your project boat until you find your
own of course you would have to supply all the funds and materials but you will
be extremely happy back at work doing what you love. And I am only across the
bay from you in Long Cove Marina.

Yup, Lola, folks do incorporate “Freedom” in the namings.
Sparrow’s first name was “Freedom’s Child.” Don’t know
the significance, never met that owner. My P.O. named
her “Nereid.” Not sure about that either, except I’ve seen
other sailboats so named. May be some minor sea goddess?

I had 14 pages of closely scribbled names, had a lot of fun
with them. Was taking my own sweet time getting the prefect
name for ship and tender. When the cell call came from the
marine documenting place, saying name it now, we need to
do the closing.

Hm. I was driving, listening to the swashbuckling sound track
of Pirates of the “Carribbean.” “Sparrow”, I said. Making me
an instant “Capatin Jac”.

No need for six pesky classes and passing those tough exams
with the Coast Guard?

“Sparrow” wasn’t on any of the name sheets I’d assembled.
I’ve saved the sheets somewhere, can copy them to you if
I ever locate them, but here are a few I remember:

StickUp
Stick Shift
Glee Club (with Chorus as dinghy)
High Yield (with Legal Tender)
Silver Lining.

My son, then seventeen, liked “Resolute” but I figured I’d
had enough of that particular personality attribute in life
gone past, and was ready to attract and envision something
way more joyful.

Best wishes on your fun.
Keep us apprised.

By the way, our tender didn’t get her own name for years, and
then became “Miss Piggy”, 'cause she is a witch to row. And
she’s portly. Does the job, but what an intractable diva-attitiude.
Very full of herself. Tends to deliver, but always with opposition.
Sigh.

Al,
I’m not sure when we’re pulling the cover off “Glory,” and I’ll be
in
Georgia the weekend of April 18-22 to pick up “RockIt (not a
Freedom).” But when you know your plans, if you’re interested, let
me
know and you’re welcome to come by Constitution Marina and visit.
If
we have sails, great. Otherwise we’ll give you the nickel tour.

I’m still trying to meet the owners of the Freedom 28 out on D
dock.
it looks like a well-kept boat.
