Air conditioner

I’m the owner of an F36 and I am looking into the possibility of
adding an A/C to the boat, to run on AC power, something like a
coolmate 12000 btu. Does anyone have any experience in installing
these units on Freedoms. Where is the best place to locate the
compressor? I plan to do the work myself.

thanks

My Freedom 36/38 has its A/C Compressor in the starboard Salon forward
locker with ducting along the Starboard side of the boat and vents in
both cabins and salon. It works well and doesn’t take up alot of
space. The throughhull is in the bilge.

What size is the ducting and how is it routed past the nav station?

Sorry,

I didn’t do the installation and my boat is in Annapolis, 200 miles
away so I can’t check this out for you. I’ll be back to the boat in
2 weeks and will check it out then and get back to you. If you have
any other questions let me know and I’ll be happy to check it out.
If you live near Annapolis I would be happy to show you the
installation.

All of the plumbing for the AC on my F36 is under the forward berth.
Whichever prior owner installed it had a sense of humor. One of the
air vents is directly behind the head and it kicks up quite a breeze -
not very welcome at certain times

The 3 inch duct work passes through the starboard cabinets with a main
vent and a control panel on the aft side of the tall salon cabinet. A
separate duct passes through the inboard corner of the storage space
behind the starboard settee, under the battery platform at the nav
station, through the bottom of the hanging closet, through the bottom
of the aft cabin closet to a vent in the closet wall of the aft cabin.
This vent is totally useless!! Almost zero air flow to the aft cabin.

The rest of the system is quite good. I use a small fan to move cool
air into the aft cabin which is where I sleep.
