air conditioning ?

Posted by merliseclyde (clyde@…>)

Has anyone retro-fit a Freedom 35 for air conditioning? We are
planning to add A/C for next summer and are looking for advice.

Given some of the previous posts, is 16,000 btus enough for cooling or
would we need two units for a 35 footer given the heat/humidity in
summer here in NC? What are good locations for the unit(s)/ductwork?

Thanks!
Merlise

We had a 16,000 BTU StowAway reverse cycle unit installed in our
1994 F-35 when we purchased it early this spring. It has worked
great for both heating and air. I tried to respond to your email
with pictures of the installation, but I don’t see the response on
the board.

Basically, the installation was done in the forward cabin under the
v-birth. The duct work runs up through the port hanging locker to a
distribution box on top. There is a small vent into the forward
cabin and a large one into the main salon. The thermostat and
controller was installed in the main salon on the starboard side.

If you would like pictures of the installation or any other
information, you can email me directly at reedjayt@…

I have airconditioning in my F-35 installed in the same manner as is
described below. It works well, but only after sundown. There are
too many hatches and glass panels in the top of the cabin for the A/C
to work very well when the sun is overhead. But this is not too bad
of a problem as mostly it is used for sleeping and closing the boat
when the bugs get too bad.
