alternator belt size for 2GM20F

Posted by svbagatelle (pmasson@…>)

can anyone tell me the length of the larger of the 2 belts (the 1/2"
one to the alternator, not the water pump)? I want to upgrade to a
Gates green stripe belt now that I have installed a Balmar alternator,
but the Yanmar manual does not give the length, and I am far from my
boat.

Paul:

I should be at my boat within the next week and I measure the belt.

The 3 GM30F uses a 37" belt-probably the same for the 20,as they are
sister designs. Proper tension, and retension after a few hours of use is
mandatory. Invest $10 in JC Whitneys belt tensioner.

Thanks Jerry (and Al), I am starting to learn about belts (the Yanmar
alternator belt is listed as A37 which I think means 37"). And thanks
for the advice about belt tensioner; I had seen the mention in
Calder’s book but I appreciate the reminder.

Here ! Here! to the belt tensioner. Without it you are guessing and may end up with a pile of black dust and a worn out belt in VERY short order. Learned the hard way. Do it right, and the belt will be absolutely reliable and long lasting. The process of belt tensioning still takes judgment, but is greatly aided by the tensioner. (by the way…the black dust appears because of a loose belt…and the rapid wearing away of the belt…which further loosens the belt…and so on and so on…until the water pump is not pumping, and the alternator is not alternating.).Fargosvbagatelle <pmasson@…> wrote: Thanks Jerry (and Al), I am starting to learn about belts (the Yanmar alternator belt is listed as A37 which I think means 37"). What’s a belt tensioner? I Googled it, and got all kinds of car model
specific gizmos for 40 bucks or more.
