Alternator

I didn’t get any response the other day about increasing the size of the alternator. Has anyone upgraded to a 100 Amp?

Sward, sorry must have missed your post.

In principle, it is possible, in practice
there may be issues.

A 100amp alternator will require either a
poly-vee belt (mulit-grooved flat serpentine styel system) or a multiple
v-belts to prevent belt slip and accelerated wear as a 100 amp alternator can
require upto 5 horsepower to drive when it ‘loads’ up.

Balmar do a range of upgrade alternators
that are already engineered to fit a number of engines. Look for the Hitachi style 3.15”
dual foot alternators. The Balmer 60 series (70 amp) with a 3 stage
external regulator will be the most efficient set up and will be a little less
demanding on the belt system and Balmar also have bracketry and pulleys to make
the install easier. The external regulator system will maximize the
output of the alternator and charge cycle of the battery. Incidentally
without an external regulator system, a 100 amp alternator will give no where
near full output even running the engine at full rpm’s.

To find out more, go to www.balmar.net

Note: I have no financial interest in
Balmar, it is just that I have fitted a number of them on the engines we
supply. There are also alternatives on the market and it is also possible
to just fit an external regulator to some existing alternator to optimize their
output or use dual alternators.
