A long time ago, some old salt told me to never change brands of motor oil in your boats diesel engine. For 20 or so years that is what I’ve been doing. Always Castrol 30W. My new boat has Amalie oil in the engine. I can’t seem to find it anywhere locally. I need to top off now and, of course, change it in the fall. I figure that any quality oil that meets the manufacturers specs will work fine. I’m curious what other people do.
Opinions?
Thanks.
The specification is more important than the brand and most engine manufacturers give the spec and list brands/types that comply. With some older engine like my M50 a high performance multigrade would likely cause the bores to glaze. The spec is for SAE 30, CC or CD rating which is pretty basic. Service stations here don’t seem to carry these basic oils so I get mine, which is Agip brand from the local Perkins dealer.
Cheers,
I was once advised, with reference to the diesel engine in my old Land Rover (similar to a marine diesel, but without the durability or reliability), never to mix different engine oils at the same time: perhaps a complete oil change with some easily available brand now, so that top-ups can be with the same stuff, would be the safest option? Apart from financial consequences, there are no contra-indications to changing the oil more frequently than the recommended service intervals.
