anchor chain rode for F30

Posted by gratton1932 (gratton1932@…>)

Because we were concerned about having too much weight in the bow,
and also because of the limited space available in the locker we
chose 30 ft of chain (hi test from West Marine) spliced to 250 ft
rope. We’ve also found using a kellet quite useful.
What is the optimum? Would like to hear from other F30 owners who
have more chain. Does the extra weight and bulk create any problems?

Surely, by now you must know that any question about anchoring will
generate an infinite number of opinions and the sailor with the
longest, heaviest rig will win.

But what you propose is certainly normal, though you do not tell us
anything about the conditions you expect to encounter–depths for
example.

I opted for a different setup with which I am well pleased. Anchor, 6
ft. of chain, 50 ft of nylon line, 20 ft of chain, and 250 ft. of
nylon.

The advantage of that second chain is that it does an excellent job
of holding down the lower rode and it is equiped with a swivel to
which can be attached a second anchor for those occasions when
anchoring in restricted areas and a Bahamian moor is called for.

I have 40 feet of chain and 200 feet nylon
for my F30. Extra weight doesn’t seem to matter. (II do make an effort to
keep the holding tank pumped, 25 gallons of water is a lot of weight in the
bow). Andy Weeks
