Anchor riding sail

Posted by Leonard (leomar97@…>)

I have a F 36 that likes to sail around at anchor and am thinking of
getting a small riding sail to try and quiet down the boat at anchor.
Has anyone ever done that or seen it on a freedom? Would like some
comments.

I’ve experimented with one on our F28. Without a backstay, the “luff” tension has to be made between the boom and the main halyard. This puts a strain on the mainsheet and traveler, although perhaps that’s no big deal. The “clew” of the sail I ended up attaching around the boom to one of the bails, probably the vang’s. Any thoughts on whether this is hard on the running rigging? I does cut down on the sailing about, though.

Dave, re your riding sail hoist. I assume you center the boom,
attach the tack to the aft boom, the clew forward, and tension with
the main halyard. Your rig is stronger than any force the riding
sail can generate.

One thing I have on my boat is a deck mounted pad eye just forward
of the port end of the traveler. I use a short length of line with a
snap shackle to secure the line to a boom bail. I then tension the
traveler to starboard. With the main halyard tensioned to the aft
boom, I have the boom secured at 3 points. I use this rig to secure
the boom while motoring, using the riding sail or at layup.

I did, however, reinforce the tack to head edge of the riding sail
with webbing. Also, when I hoist, I add a loose keeper line from the
halyard shackle to a boom bail.

I think, this season, I’m going to experiment with a pennant between
the tack and the boom so as to raise the sail and get a better angle
from the clew to the gooseneck. That should give me better tension
and a flatter riding sail.
