We are selling “Castaway”, a UK built Freedom 35 cat ketch with centreboard, presently ashore on the East coast of Sweden, and due to be launched later this month. We have owned her for 25 years, and she has been refitted inside and out during that time, as well as having two substantial overhauls of the engine and gearbox. All maintenance has been on a continuing basis, sheets, halliards, sails etc replaced as needed, and she is ready to go as soon as the sails are bent on and the tanks filled. Some small adaptations have been made for Baltic cruising (divided pulpit and stern anchor), but she is little changed from when the PO sailed her across the Atlantic several times, to participate in Antigua Week.
Current sails are wrap-around with zipped pockets and single ply aft of the zips, which reduces weight and eases control of the shape, using the original wishbone booms. Slab reefing on both, two points in the main and one in the mizzen. The most recent survey (2024), done for our insurers, was satisfactory and is available, along with a full inventory.
Self steering is by Windpilot Pacific vane, or Raymarine Wheelpilot for light airs and motoring. The VP 2003 normally aspirated 3 cylinder diesel has started first time every time for the last 3 seasons – since I replaced the fuel pump – and runs reliably, giving 6.5 knots @ 3200 rpm via a 3 blade feathering Kiwi prop.
I shall be very sad to see her go, but age and arthritis are restricting my ability to undertake the annual commissioning and lay-up.
I have been a frequent user of the Freedom bulletin board, so there are a number of pictures of her, as well as my comments on sailing her, should you search my posts. I’ll try to add a picture or two with this post, if I can master the tech!
The boat has VAT paid status in the EU, having been there for ten years, and would also be eligible for ‘returned goods’ exemption in the UK. I am looking for £30,000, but will consider offers.
If you are interested in enjoying and looking after Castaway in the future, please contact me by e-mail < freshwater.sms@gmail.com >
Best wishes,
Gerald
