Anybody know about this Mull 28 for sale in RI???

Posted by stephendewey (stephendewey@…>)

Hi all - new member here. Looking for a “starter” cruiser for my
young family (Sail often on my parent’s Mull 38 “Duet” #152 in
Padanaram, MA).

Anyway - Came across the below listing today. Anybody know the
history about this boat?

I’d also appreciate any comments in general about the Mull 28 - it
appears to be a 3/4 version of the 36/38.

Thanks
Steve Dewey

Steve,
I view my Mull 28 as a compact version of the Mull 30. It’s roomy,
has excellent performance, and like all Freedom’s very easy to sail.
My '87 doesn’t seem to be afflicted by blisters. Be aware that your
3/4 concept is not really valid. To compare similar boats you need to
compare the weights of the boats, or use the method of cubing the
length of the two boats, and comparing the numbers. Herm

The listing states that this boat has a 4’6" draft. I measured 4’10"
on my Mull 28. If you sail a lot in thin water, this may be
important to you. Herm

Herman,

Well if we compare displacement It would be a 4/10 version… (~6,000
vs ~15,000).

You mention it is roomy - At what point will a family of 4 find it
claustrophobic? My daughters are quite small still (currently 3 years
old and 3 months old). The 3 year old is an accomplished sailor
(passenger) with several overnights on Grammy & Grampy’s boat.

Planned use would be day sails, 2 & 3 day weekends and an annual week
long cruise.

I’ve found that 4 on the 38 is comfortable for a week or 2 (never been
aboard longer), will do 6 for a long weekend, and we’ve had 10 on
board for the Figawi Race weekend (but plenty of liquid sleep
enhancement)

I’ve come to love the 38 so much that it is hard for me to look beyond
Freedoms for our own boat. The Mull 28 is appealing because it’s size
should be less intimidating for my wife to handle, as well as less
expensive to purchase & maintain yet it has “big boat” features -
namely an enclosed head & inboard diesel.

Steve,
I think the 28 will work for 2,3 day weekends, and a week if
folks use the holding tank sparingly (that means don’t flush after
pee). The interior will work nicely; he two kids can use the quarter
berth (which is quite large), and you in the V-berth. This leaves the
salon in daytime configuration. Herm

Ahhh Yes, the dreaded undersized holding tank. Mom & Dad upgraded Duet to the under the V-Birth 30 + Gallon fix courtesy of Warren River Boatworks. Is there room under the V-Birth for a similar upgrade on the 28 (assuming you don’t need to store sails there). Steve,
There is room down there, BUT, I don’t know where this
particular boat has its depth, and speedo sensors placed. I’d bet
that it would be a challenge (read expensive, custom-shaped tank, or
moving the sensors) to install a “standard” V-berth holding tank.
