I’m going to try to be there around 9 - 9:30… I’ll either be driving
a citrus yellow insight or a red PT Cruiser. If anyone else goes,
please don’t hesitate to introduce yourself.

Hey Lance, and others attending! I am SO sorry not to
be there. Sure hope someone wordy will write all us
left coast, sale-missing, lamentors something juicy
and definitive about the whole show. Who came, what
went, whether this means TPI has sort of given up on
getting future custom-build orders for our beloved
Freedoms. Etc.
Love to see some digippix of the whole show, too.
After you’ve run in and first gotten your primary
treasures, of course. And say, would you keep your eye
out for a double deep sink?
Seriously. I’d like one as deep as those that were in
the F32’s. Don’t know what issued standard in the
F36/38’s, but mine’s just a nootch more shallow than
the cabinet can allow. So I’d like to get a bigger
(deeper) one. More stuff to could be thrown in it
quickly when we race. Such a handy receptacle on short
notice. If you’d be willing to watch for one for me,
I’d be happy to send you back dimensions, and pay
shipping and all if one comes available. Thanks.

No double sinks
at the yard sale, but two F45 style sinks.
Lots of teak
stuff and tanks for fuel.
Good bowsprits
and stern pulpits, mostly for larger boats.
We found some
replacement goodies and saved our selves a couple hundred bucks.
Still going on
as I write.

Oh, thank you, George. At least I feel better about
the sinks.
Would have loved to see the teak what’s it’s. Let us
know later what cool things you scored. Some of us are
attending this sale vicariously.

I think the catch of the sale was a F24 CF mast that had never been
used, going for $750.00. As of around 11, it was still available. If
anyone needs one, I think they’ll be willing to deal.
There were mast collars for F32’s, some polyurethane rings, but as
noted there was only one sink that I saw - a deep single with a
stainless drainboard molded in.
The teak consisted of many louvered doors of various sizes, and I
think the three pallets worth went as a lot. There was also a lot of
small teak trim pieces.
There were some mast/boom vang fittings, lots and lots and lots of
spools of wire of various gauges, toe rails, and some of the best
strawberry lemonade I’ve ever had at a very reasonable price
($.25/glass).
I talked to a couple of the guys working the sale (all, sadly, in
grey “Legacy” shirts) about the situation with Freedoms. One
gentleman told me that the molds were all out in back, would take a
fair amount of work to prepare for a new hull, and that it would
take a pretty lucrative contract to go through the trouble. Legacys
are apparently the hot deal. Another gentleman conceded that Legacy
sales are good, but Freedom owners are much nicer to deal with. He
said he is working on deals for three different boat deals. One
would be a 50’+ Freedom, one would be an “oyster” style, and they
are also bidding on production of the New York Yacht Club one-design
(conventional rig). So it sounds like sail production isn’t an
entirely lost cause.
The other issue I talked to them about was mast repair. Three
different people stated that the best bet for a broken carbon spar
these days is REPAIR, not replacement. The technology for re-
wrapping and re-epoxying carbon has come far enough in the last 15
years that the repair will be equally as strong as the original. As
for the strength of our carbon spars, I was told a story about a F24
going aground in Vancouver hard enough to sink the boat. The mast
failed - three seasons later! - as a result of damage suffered
during the grounding.
Do we have great boats or what?

I spoke with Paul Petronella (sp?). He stated that they hadn’t
made a Freedom in six years and that they had no reasonable
expectation of any new custom orders, much less going back into
production.
We also got onto the subject of the add on sugar scoops for the F36
and other models. He had none in stock, but is always willing to
make one up for $1500.00 FOB RI. The boat yards charge $3500 for
the scoop plus 3K for a blended glass installation. If you are
willing to have a bolt on installation, this become a wintertime do
it your self project for relatively small money. Even if you want
the blended glass, you can contract directly with Freedom and have
the scoop delivered to the yard and save 2K. Food for Thought.
I scored a rudder bearing and some minor stuff, but am kicking
myself big time. I had passed on some lifeline stanchion gates that
were all handed the same way. Halfway back to NYC , I realized that
I could have had 2 reversed at a welding shop.

macks,
I believe my stepfather picked up two of those gate stanchions. If
you’re still interested, contact me off-list and I’ll see if I can
convince him to give them up, since he really doesn’t have a project
for them yet…
