Coring is the exception and not the norm on the early F36’s. I have
removed, inspected and repaired almost every deck and hull
penetration on my boat. The stanchion, deck fills and rail mounts
around the perimeter of the deck are through a 4" band of solid
glass that comprises the hull/deck joint. The depth sounder is
through solid glass which comprises the seam where the 2 halfs of
the hull were joined. All penetrations in the transom are through
solid glass as the transom is not cored.
Everywhere else, I have looked is balsa cored with backing plates.
Factory installed penetrations have no epoxy core, including High
stress points such as traveler and mainsheet attachment. Fittings
are secured with 5200 and backing plates. The only damage I have
found to date is 2 rotten core areas at hand rail penetrations and 8
sq ft of rotten core around the companionway hatch. I think that
TPI / Freedom relied on the thickness of the fiberglass skins to
resist the crushing loads. For the most part, it worked, but I have
epoxy cored everything regardless.
