Can you use an assymetrical spinnaker on a Freedom 30? What do you
need to do to hook one up? What do you recommend for a solid boom vang
with a stainless steel collar.

I can’t give you any first hand advice about a spinnaker, but I can heartily
recommend a Garhauer rigid vang. Garhauer will also make you a mast collar for
mounting it.

I am in the process of making an articulating bowsprit using the pulpit
gun-mount hardware on my Freedom 28-2. I am planning on flying assym.
spinnaker from it. If it works, I’ll post pictures and details.
P.S. eBay is a wonderful thing:
Found my 3.5" diameter t-6063 7 ft. pole, delivered to my door for $64.
Price one at West Marine.

Hi Charlie,
as has been stated, the garhauer vang is a good purchase - Practical
Sailor reviewed it favorably last year, and it seems to be a good value.
As far as an assymetrical spinnaker, Glory has been outfitted with
a ‘cruising gennaker’ which is essentially the same thing. Glory’s is a
North sail with a sock, and it tacks to the bow pulpit. It is
relatively easy to set and fly with two people (and an autopilot), but
I’m not sure I’d try it solo. The hoist is to the top of the jib stay,
and the previous owners added running backstays in order to handle the
extra stress of the sail. The running backs go to the same point on the
mast, and can be locked in at two different positions on the deck.
For the kind of cruising we do right now, it is a nice sail to have. We
can set it on a long broad reach tack and it probably adds 2+ kts to
the overall boat speed in most wind conditions.
