My Autopilot has gone belly up. It is probably original equipment on
my 1986 F-36. The service shop I called told me he could not get new
circut boards for that model any more. The tech I talked to told me
that the new Raymarine S1 autopilot control head would work with my
installation. Has anyone out there been through this?
Leonard
I have a spare Autohelm, believe it is a 6000, but
could be moderately lesser. It worked when bench
tested, and boat tested, this summer. I’ll
look around the boat parts section (cardboard boxes)
of the garage and report back here.
You are welcome to it. I don’t know if it
replaces/restores the glitch in yours. Have you
isolated the contibutor to the failure yet?

Say: does anybody out there have a Seatalk VMG kicking
around collecting dust? Still desperately seeking one
of those…

I had an old Autohelm, of which the drive unit broke. A new drive unit (wheel
drive) works
just as well with the old control unit, so presumably the control codes and
feedback are the
same, as are the interconnecting plugs. Probably it will work the other way
round, too (old
drive unit/new controller), but Raymarine will advise if asked. I think the
drive unit is the
more expensive bit, so worth a try.

Before going to West Marine, you might want to try Defender. I bought
a new St4000 for my 1993 35 last year. At West Marine it was
approximately $1,000. At Defender it was $750.

Raymarine has discontinued the ST4000 in favor of the new, I think, S1. The wheel drive unit appears to be the same. There are often replacement parts available on eBay.

My autohelm went belly up as well (I think the ST5000 or 6000). I was told it was the course computer that went bad. As these products are discontinued, Raymarine will do repairs, they are located in Merrimack, NH. I’m planning on taking mine there this winter (if I take the coarse computer out, none of my electronics work). Good luck and let me know how you resolve your problem! If you need to replace it, try Alpha Marine Systems in Mercer Island, WA. I have a 1985 F36 and have an original 1985 Alpha autopilot, if you can believe that. I bought the boat in 2000. In 2002 I had a prob. and sent it in for repair–they fixed it for a few hundred and sent it back. Another prob. this summer, same deal. These were not mechanical problems, but something in the control unit-- a “logic” issue???I use this every time I leave the harbor and for very extended periods and am amazed at its longevity. I would buy another when the original finally bites the dust, which may never happen.
