Autohelm

Posted by William A. Cormack (wacormack@…>)

Dear Freedom Friends:
My Autohelm 4000 appears to be original equipment on my 1986 F-36.

It sometimes binds when I am hand steering. This feels like the release clutch is not fully releasing.

One windy day this week the two halves of the unit separated. Fortunately this did not happen in a close quarters situation and I was able to get it back together.

Does anyone have cures for these problems?

Bill

Could be a frayed belt. I would recommend
replacing the belt, and keeping the original as a spare. A clean up inside is a
good ideas from time to time, too.

I had the same thing on my 1986 AH4000. You probably need a new V-
belt. And a cleaning job on the clutch mechanism. You can pry open
the ring and take off the belt. Probably there are loose steel
wires that came off the sides of the belt.
