Autopilot for F39 PH Schooner

Posted by dppat2000 (DPPAT@…>)

Hey Gang,
I need a new autopilot to replace the ailing wheel pilot. Does anyone
have any recommendations/suggestions?

I would also love to communicate with other PH39 owners to see how
they have outfitted the boat.

Thanks
Dave

Dave,

In 2000 I installed a complete Nexus System, wind, speed, auto pilot and
AP remote in my Nordic 40. It was flawless from Oregon to Alaska to
Mexico to Hawaii and back. We then swallowed the hook and sold the boat.

Last year we decided we had enough juice left to do it again and bought
a Freedom 39PH so we could have a little more protection from the
weather. We’ve just about got her ready to go after adding a hydronic
heating system and upgrading the battery and charging systems. The
autopilot is the final upgrade. I’m suffering from price shock. Prices
have trippled, seems to me in the eight years since our last
foolishness. Had they just doubled I would have gone with the
Nexus/ComNav Ap again.

I just bought a Raymarine S2G Core Pack and intend to use it with my
existing below deck linear hydraulic drive that was hooked to an old
Navico Powerpilot PH8000. My choosing the Raymarine in the final
analysis was based on price and availability. Talking to salespeople at
several boatshows and marine outfitters was a waste of time. Hopefully
I’ll have it installed soon and can tell you what I really think. At
least you know there is another PH39 owner out there.

Hi Dave,

I don’t know the sailing character of the PH39, but on my F33/35CK I
have been disappointed with several brands of wheelpilots. I always
ended up having to do the steering myself in conditions where I least
liked to be at the helm. For motoring and inshore light wind sailing
they are helpfull, but otherwise they always left me standing in the
rain, litterally. I finally went for a Voyager Windvane, which did a
fine job. The more wind, the better it worked. In combination with the
old wheelpilot I had everything I needed.

Now, on the F44 I have an expensive and complicated Robertson AP20
with huge Hynautics hydraulics. It is strong enough to handle the
boat, but eats a lot of current and it acts funny sometimes. When
motoring, the shortcut valve hampers because of the higher voltage of
charging. The AP20 gives an error which I haven’t been able to solve
yet. So now I’m in the situation that I have to steer manually when
motoring.

If I had to do it all over again and buy new stuff myself, I would go
for a wheelpilot for motoring and a windvane for sailing.

Hello Dave,

Ketch 22, a Freddom 39 Express has an Autohelm 6000, which has
performed relatively flawlessly for 10 years and about 10,000 open
ocean miles. Since I bought it, Autohelm became Raymarine. I don’t
know if that has affected quality.

The 6000 is a below decks unit. I also have a second motion sensor,
which allows you to tune the resolution of the unit by trading off
sensitivity vs electrical use; i.e. higher sensitivity equals higher
electrical use. I don’t know if this is a standard feature, but it is
very useful in some wind and sea situations.

Regards,

Tom Marlow

I replaced the wheel pilot on my F33 in 2006 with a Raymarine S1. It is integrated with Raymarine’s 3 instrument sail package and a Garmin GPS that are all tied together. They communicate well and it has done an excellent job to date in near coastal waters.Lou----- Original Message ----From: dppat2000 <DPPAT@…>To: FreedomOwnersGroup@yahoogroups.comSent: Thursday, February 14, 2008 11:07:36 PMSubject: [FreedomOwnersGroup] Autopilot for F39 PH Schooner

Did you use the rudder angle indicator? If
so how and where. Raymarine said its not waterproof so the 33 that seemed to be
a problem.
Thanks

The indicator is mounted, in a box made from 4 inch diameter exterior electrical pipe, and the tie rod connected to the rudder as high up on the transom as I could get it. I don’t remember Raymarine saying that their was any problem with exterior locations. At any rate, I have been sailing with it for over a year with no problems.Lou----- Original Message ----From: Alan Kusinitz <akusinitz@…>To: FreedomOwnersGroup@yahoogroups.comSent: Saturday, February 16, 2008 5:40:44 AMSubject: RE: [FreedomOwnersGroup]
