Hi everybody.
This past summer, the starboard winch parted from the cabin top of my
boat while I was raising my mainsail in the ever-interesting mouth of
the Merrimack River. All the barrel nuts sheared off simultaneously,
leaving four nuts and four washers on the sole of the cabin, and the
winch with a few turns of main halyard jiggling around on a course
for the big drink. Luckily, fate, lightening fast reflexes, and a
functioning cam cleat saved the day.
Now it’s winter time. “Graceful Rose” is wrapped in plastic, and I
have 6 months to fix a few things.
Does anyone have information about how to mount the Barient 8P
winch? I’ve checked the web quickly and only found 10P and other
models. Before I start pulling the thing apart–an activity I suspect
that will be accompanied by lots of little gears and springs flying
around–I figured I’d ask.
Thanks,
Peter

Hi Peter,
To access F-21’s Barient No 8 Winches:
Put a big screw driver in the winch handle hole and push
down which will release the drum. When you pull it up you will see
the ratchet pawls held in with springs. You will also see the 4
screw holes on the base. CAUTION: Use a towel (or cardboard box)
around the winch so you don’t loose any parts.

Biff and Nick, Thanks. I figured out the pressing down and
releasing the drum thing. Now at least I can re-mount the winch,
because I can access the screws. As for “servicing/ lubricating” the
other components–we’ll see. I read often about the servicing of
winches, but they seem pretty reliable without a lot of fiddling.
Again, thanks a lot for the helpful and speedy replies.

Tom,looking at the albums on the web site I do not believe that Pearson made the freedom with rubber rub rails. You had me wondering and now I thing that I will install them on mine unless I sell the boat before I get to it.Charlie D Red Bank— On Sat, 11/22/08, Thomas Curran <kaikouravoyager@…> wrote:From: Thomas Curran <kaikouravoyager@…>Subject: [freedom21] Re: Barient 8P winchesTo: freedom21@yahoogroups.comDate: Saturday, November 22, 2008, 8:07 PM
