Our second (from the top) batten came out of its plastic guide by the
luff while sailing. It caused the front of the batten sleeve to
tear, and when lowering the sail, the batten got caught on the lazy
jack. Had it been under heavier wind conditions, that could have
caused a problem. But, as it was, I was able to just run the main up
to untangle everything and then lower it all the way.
I agree with Sean, spend the money to get it fixed. It will pay for
itself in less headaches and hassles.

It strives to be “a shape and a way to hold it.” A good sail is
wonderful - and needs care.
If your battens are slipping out you need to examine the sail
carefully.
Take it down, lay a tarp out on you driveway (as we did) and go
over it carefully.
Inspect everything for wear and “tiredness.” Take the battens out
of their pockets.
Make sure all slides are in good shape and are lubricated. Try to
see if the sail is getting baggy.
Number the battens and replace, tightening them in so well they
can’t escape
We ended up replacing the batten pocket slides on Emmylou.
And we have had our local rigger repair a few slight things that
help the sail excel.
A bit pricey (to spend on a used sail) but satisfying.
How have you made out?

Hi Sean. It felt great and a little bit intimidating to be out on
the high seas. When I raise my main sail, the luff end of the
battens sometimes don’t stay in the the little plastic pockets along
the luff. This results in the luff of the main not being properly
taught. Question: Should the battens be somehow tightened into the
plastic brackets—I notice they have screws in them? I have, of
course, tied in the battens at the leech. Thanks. Hope you’re well.

Yesterday I passed under the 35 foot vertical height span,

but I have heaps to learn. Henceforth please refer to me

Thanks. By the way, the “Graceful Rose” is in the water,

The mast height is ~31.5 feet. I ran a measuring tape while
