Scott–I’ve been researching the idea of a bimini for a couple of
months now. The problems with the stock off the shelf units are: 1.
they come stock with aluminum frames and are a bit fragile (imagine a
guest boarding and grabbing the frame for balance)2. They are made to
fit a range and adjustments and slides compromise unit strength.
The problem with a custom bimini is that they are quite expensive
(estimates range from $700-$1000) This compares to about $500 for the
off the shelf offerings with the stainless upgrade. Custom is
definately the best choice if you can afford it. I’ve been looking
at the Mantis, a portable unit made by Pro-techt. The reviews that
I’ve seen are pretty good except that in winds over 20 knots one
needs to fold the unit up. The mantis costs about $250 in sunbrella
fabric and with the mounting hardware. I’m about 90 percent sure
that I’m going to give this gadget a try. If I do, I’ll post a
message on this site giving a review. You can check the unit for
yourself on line at Pro-techt.com. Let me know if you have any other
info about biminis.–Thanks–Chris

I have a custom bimini(came with the boat) it’s nice when docked. I can’t see trying to sail with it up. You can’t see anything. As far as the wind with it up it could make docking difficult.chris montgomery <freedom.sailingguy@…> wrote: —Scott–I’ve been researching the idea of a bimini for a couple of months now. Agree. Bimini/sun shade is impractical underway (big Tilley or
Ultimate hat is good…) At dock I have rigged a sun shade made from
a cast-off blue solumbra square (it was a bimini designed to zip to
a dodger and tie off to a backstay) about the same size as the
cockpit. It took a bit to figure out how to use it on the 21. Here’s
what I did:

I cut a hole in the center of the material and passed the main
halyard thru it to the end of the boom. I have an old telescoping
reaching pole that I pass through the loop around the boom of reef1
and clip to the aft lower padeye (mainsheet attachment point) on the
boom. Then I raise the main halyard (and hence boom/extension pole
to a comfortable height. The pole holds out the aft end of the
material, where a pole sewn into a pocket has lines running almost
directly down to the 2 aft cleats. The forward end of the material
has a pole lashed on (remember, this end is above the boom) and
lines at either end run down into the cam cleats for the staysail.
Very strong and adjustable. I will take some photos and post
sometime. Oh, and the nice thing is the whole thing (material with 2
attached poles plus free reaching pole) rolls up compactly and
stores right above our oars on the port side stuck back behind
the “fuel locker.”
