Has anyone used biodiesel in their Yanmars?
Boat/US just ran a piece on it saying that, among other things, it cleans up sludge in the tank (the sludge ends up in the filters) and has greater lubricity. A 20/80 biodiesel/petrodiesel blend is recommended.

Bill,
what year is your boat? There are only two downsides to biodiesel
that I’ve heard. The first is that fuel economy will suffer a
little. The other is that, depending on the age of your engine and
fuel system, you may get swelling of some of the rubber hosing. I’m
pretty sure that to use biodiesel in my engine, I’d have to do some
fuel hose replacement first, but I think anything newer than 1990 or
so should be ok.
Have you found a supplier? The article I read cited people buying it
in portable jugs they had to bring down to the boat, and it was
fairly expensive in that form. Just curious…

My boat is a 1986 F-36.
For supplies http://biodiesel.org/ lists several retailers in Mass., one of
which is in Falmouth and is not too far away. I haven’t called to ask the
price and I assume that I would buy 100% biodiesel and carry it to the boat
and add enough to get a 20/80 bio/petro mix. Hadn’t thought about the hose
issue but changing hoses shouldn’t be a big deal.
