Bomar Hatch problems Freedom 32

Posted by jsforgey (jsforgey@…>)

I have a 1985 Freedom 32 (Hoyt)with the original Bomar hatches.

Some of the bolts have siezed, One broke off when I tried to remove
it. One of the struts broke in the middle, one broke where it joins to
the hatch.

It was also missing a few of the knobs to secure the hatches.

Where do I get replacement parts?
Has anyone dealt with this?

Great!

They seem to have everything that I need to replace and make them ship shape.

I need to free up some of the bolts, and penetrating oil seems to make little difference.

Suggestions?

Scott,
I wish you luck. I tried drilling into the side of the hinges so
that I could introduce “Liquid Wrench” to the pivot bolts, daily for
weeks on end, and could not remove the hinge pivot bolts. There’s
something about stainless steel, aluminum alloy, and salt water that
locks things permanently. I suggested to Pompanette they use Lock-
Tite on their screws to prevent this permanent lockup. Note that the
fixed side of the hinge is also screwed in place from underneath, so
removing the hinge in its entirety also is impossible. I was doing
all this so that I could send out the movable part of the hatch to
get the glazing and gasket replaced by a professional outfit in
Connecticut. I finally gave in and purchased the necessary glazing,
gasketing, and adhesives from Pompanette and did it myself. If you
need new glazing, I strongly suggest that you make a template for
their use from your old glazing, or get some smoked lexan or lucite
and do it yourself. I’ve successfully replaced everything and hatch
no longer leaks.
BTW: When the parts listing states “high” or “low-profile” for
gasketing it refers to the height of the gasket cross-section, NOT
the type of hatch it’s attached to (which are also referred to as
high and low-profile). Herm SV

Scott,

I tried the same thing when repainting my 7 Bomar hatches and did
not succeed because I wanted to keep the glazing. Otherwise, heating
the aluminum with a blowtorch helps to get the bolts loose,
certainly in combination with thin ‘crawling oil’ like WD 40.

Good luck,
Michel
