boom vang problem

When I went to put the rig back together the outboard end of the boom would not come down to horizontal. The spring inside the vang appeared “stuck” and no amount of tension on the line would free it. Upon disassembly a large quantity of grey powder came out of the tube, and a lot of it remained on the piston. Hoping to be able to remove the spring, flush it all out with fresh water and reassemble after using some anti corrosive spray.

Anyone else faced this issue?

The label on my vang is very faded, but I assume it is original equipment on the 1995 Pedrick 35. Anyone know what make that might have been?

Closer inspection reveals that it is a Hood Performance Vang.

I’m all set with this. By removing all of the pins the entire tube is open and the springs free to travel. Tap on the ground several times and out comes 20 years worth of white/grey powder and the springs–they look for all the world like garage door opener springs, one inside the other. Flush with water and it looks as good as new.
