Buy a new sailboat to get better engine access???

Hi Jody,

Is your motive to look for an other sailboat really that you want
better engine access?? Why not go for a fishing platform with an
outboard engine. Excellent access!

Hi Mike , In the last 3 years I’ve spent approx. 3500 Dollars on installing parts at about 200 value . I simply cannot reach half the engine. An example I removed the manifold , but than found myself not being able to reach right to align it to go back. Its tight , Im also close to 6 ’ 1 and 280 which doesn’t help the fit. Take Care Jodymike_c_f35ck <mike_c_f35ck@…> wrote:

Jody:
As most do-it-yourself boat owners and professional service people are likely to agree on is “serviceability”, or lack of it! The nature of small boats (under, say, 50-feet) is to cram 10 pounds of “stuff” into a 5-pound bag. I have given long thought as to stowing “stuff” not more than two layers deep. But that is somewhat after the fact. If a boat (or anything) isn’t designed with serviceability in mind, then you are where you (and many) are; cutting access ports through bulkheads and hull liners or worse, cutting out imbedded tanks under v-berths or cabin soles!
It’s an extra eye required when looking for “your perfect ship”. I recall racing aboard a 28 or 30 foot (Tartan maybe, sorry I lost total recall) that, when the dining table “box” was removed, the entire engine was completely exposed. I was impressed. But I’m sure there are some negatives also with that placement (shaft length, engine noise?), so my point is that every boat has some kind of compromise and may require special (read expensive) care. I have yet to see (or afford) the exception.
Smooth sailing (and less motoring? :-).
