I just started using my Camberspar jib and notice that on a reach the
headstay rubs on the bow pulpit. This is on a Freedom 36. Anybody know
what’s up with this? It can’t be right. Thanks for any info…

Hi, I have the F38 which is the same hull. I found that changing the
length of the tack solved the problem. The length is correct when
there are no creases in the sail.

Hi Bernard,
The forestay on the Freedoms are not very tight. In fact, they’re
only there to hold the jib in place. You’ll find that while running, the
forestay will rub against the bow pulpit. Most of us tape the area where
it rubs to avoid excess wear. The price of simplicity.
Good luck

Thanks for responding Tim,
When you say “change the length of the tack” do you mean more haylard
tension, or change the headstay length. I’ve tried both.
By the way… did you buy your boat from Nelson’s in Alameda
California?

From the F36 manual: The headstay should be adjusted to that it
deflects 6 inches at shoulder hight. Anotheer rule of thumb is that the
head stay should be tight enough so that the camber spar swings without
hitting the mast. one more effect of a too loose head stay is that it
will lie on top of the jib halyard and bind on the halyard sheave
making raising and lowering the jib problematic.

That sounds about how mine is adjusted. Does your headstay rub on the
bow pulpit when your reaching or running in 15+ knots of wind.
Someone else responded that rubbing is normal. That seems weird…

It did rub on our 28. I put a Perimeter chafe guard on the pulpit
tubing at that spot. Perhaps this only happens on gun-mount spinnaker
boats?

I have seen no evidence of any rubbing other than the foot of the jib.
