Hi - I, too,l had a plywood, foldable, trailerable racing cat prior to the F21 (and a Lightning 21 down by Sandy Hook in the 60’s). Cat2fold is interesting, but not a boat I would want to sail… Sandy Hook was my “surfing beach” before GNR took it over. The “exclusive” area was simply overlooked back then (faces Highlands, not the ocean). Make you own boat clothing optional…!

Hi guys, I’d love to meet up with either of you. I have always admired the F21 as a boat that I would sail if I were going to go back to a monohull. I actually have a 30 foot racing catamaran that scares the hell out of my wife with its 42 foot mast. It takes a fair amount to get it up on one hull but when it does you’re moving at 20+ knots and it’s not her idea of a pleasant day. Based on some of my research, I began considering a “biplane” rig with a smaller sail on each hull versus one big one in the middle. I immediately thought of the Freedom 21 with its unstayed carbon fiber mast and started looking for masts and sails. I’m finding that the masts give out before the boats so there are more people looking for masts than there are masts. It would probably be cheapest for me to buy a couple of 21s and take the masts and sails from them. (If my biplane rig didn’t work out I could always put the masts and sails back on the original boats and sell them.) But I feel like that would be bad karma because if it did work out, I’d be stealing the wings from a couple of nice small monohulls. So right now I have one sail and am weighing the advantages of carbon fiber versus aluminum and wondering if tabernacles might make the boat easier to rig from the trailer. I figure that if I build the masts to Freedom 21 specs, I ought to be able to minimize my losses should it not work out as I could probably find buyers for the masts and sails. Oddly enough, I’ve found my folding and biplane rig ideas are not totally original as I came upon this far more elegant version of what I’ve been fiddling with for the past couple of years at www.cat2fold.com. When you go deeper into his site, you’ll see that he ultimately decided on a biplane rig. Of course, the boat is up for sale now, so who knows how it worked out for him.
I sailed out of Chesequake Creek most of my life, though I am familiar with Keyport having owned a 1958 Pedersen for a number of years from which I windsurfed. I kept a tri on the Navesink for seven years before moving back to Chesequake to be closer to home (and get more sailing). I’m trying to figure out whether to try Perth Amboy (it’s closer to where I live) with the idea that I’ll get out more that way or whether I should try to join Keyport Yacht Club; it seems like it’s more protected than Raritan in a Nor’ easter. While I was fine on the Creek with a 21 foot tri (same beam) it seems like it might be a bit dicey with a 30 foot cat when the tide is running! Where are you guys?
Patrick

Hi Art, I would agree on the answers you got for the battery placement and fuel line.
I have my battery next to the fuel tank under port settee and thoughts of an accidental spark bothered me last summer. Plus boats list due to the engine and battery weight caused some barnacles on jell coat above water line. So one of the projects for next year is putting it inside on stbd side.
As far as your mast, was the tabernacle installed by the owners or factory ? I have a shoal draft and a factory installed mast step which I unretrofitted last summer. Tabernacle was loose and banged around when boat encountered waves. Didn’t look safe.
There are few more F21s in Raritan Bay and I am across the chanel in Brooklyn.
May be one day we can have a gathering around Sandy Hook.
Rgds.

Just brought home a Freedom 21, #48. Over the past few months I have been watching and reading the content of this group and I have to say, what I gather here convinced me the 21 was the boat for me.As I purchased the 21 from consignment, I did not have the best opportunity to gather much history on this hull. She appears in good condition for her age. Her condition, that fact that she is unmolested and she has the stepped mast retrofit (that appears to have been done well) convinced me to buy her. This is my first boat w/o a centerboard, as a matter of fact, it is my first ballested boat, does this mean I’m getting old? Actually, it seemed the perfect fit for the whole family to enjoy.I hope to gather some good info here as well as offer some of my own tid-bits where I can.Art
