Compare and contrast Winged Keel or shallow fin keel?

Posted by ereiss (ereiss@…>)

I’m off looking at F38s. We need shallow draft but are confused by the
advantages and disadvantages of the two styles. Can someone help me
understand the advantages and disadvantages?

Thank you

Ed–
Call me at 920-839-9353 and I’d be happy to talk to you about my 1991 F-38 wing keel for sale up here in Sturgeon Bay (Lake Michigan). I chartered a F-35 deep draft fin keel in BVI before I bought this boat, so while different boats I can provide some useful information. (I have chartered MANY find keel boats, and centerboarders, too; and owned a Bristol 35.5 fin keel boat and a Seasprite 28 full keel boat before moving up to the F-38.)
I did alot of talking before deciding on this boat–especially to Mark Edwards, the Freedom yachts “guru” who was with the company for probably 25-30 years and knows these boats inside and out. It was on his recommendation that I bought my 38 with wing keel. Oh, and you should know that if you find a 38 with a “shoal draft” as opposed to a wing it is an F-36 that was converted to a 38 after it was built. The 38 only had wing or deep draft keels available, and not the shoal option. Most would agree the Shoal is not the way to go, coming in third to the wing and deep keels.
Best thing about wing, by the way, is that it is VERY stiff…boat does not heel much. A real pleasure for any “timid” crew members.
