composite rudder ready for painting

Posted by georgedonaldmckay (mmadonna@…>)

Hello everyone, I just posted some pics of the new composite rudder I built and
I will be
trying it out this weekend. I am in the process of laying up a new CF gun
mount. Will keep
you posted. Oh and Al, I am taking your advice and am adding 2 extra scuppers
and I am
using my spartight at the mast base in a box that I will glass in. I bought a
new mast collar
and boot from rigrite! Cheers

With as responsive as the F21 is with the regular rudder, you will
definitely want to be careful with your new one. You may actually
turn back into yourself and end up with the bow hitting you amidships.

Let us know how it works.

Doug

hi George,

I am currently making up a new composite lifting rudder for my UK-
built Freedom 21 which in my case will consist of a pre-cured CF
plate “core” with marine ply facings which I will shape to an NACA
section then wrap with CF fabrix & epoxy resin. I would be very
interested in how you made-up your new composite rudder? Also I have
tried to exactly duplicate the F21 rudder planform so as to keep the
centre of pressure and tiller force exactly the same as the standard
rudder deisgn. By the way where are your photos posted exaclty? I
looked on the “Photos” section of our site and they do not seem to be
there? Any further background you can give to your rudder build would
be very interesting.

Best regards,

Wilf Bishop

The template I used is from a Mini Transat boat but is just a NACA foil. I
built the rudder
of Corecell 550 structural foam, then cut eht template out of metal plates. The
metal was
then tapped into the foam and I used a knife to enlarge the slices to the
appropriate depth
. Then I used a belt sander to fair the foam to the template. Then I vaccuum
bagged 2
layers of carbon and a layer of kevlar using West System epoxy, being careful to
make sure
the layers had not set up all the way (about 5 hours in my climate with the fast
hardener)
otherwise I would have had to sand off the blush in between layers. Then I made
up Epoxy
with fairing filler and appliend in about layers and sanded in between with a
longboard to
get a smooth foil. Then I applied gel coat (3 layers with sanding to get it
perfectly
smooth) I will check to see why th pictures didnt turn up, George
